Taking on Marilyn Shedden’s bible challenge

-

In response to Marilyn Shedden’s excellent challenge to choose a key bible text explaining Jesus’ resurrection, I offer Luke 24:47 in which the risen Jesus himself summarises the whole Christian faith.

He says: ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’

Here are six observations:

1 Jesus is actually alive, speaking and eating with his disciples.

2 ‘Thus it is written’: The resurrection fulfils, completes and vindicates the entire Old Testament.

3 ‘The Christ should suffer’: Jesus’ death was always plan A. His mission: to die for the sins of his people.

4 ‘Repentance’: however offensive it is to hear, we must turn from sin and change our minds about Jesus. He rose from the dead, therefore we must listen to what he says.

5 ‘Forgiveness of sins’: Jesus’ resurrection proves his power to forgive all our wrongdoing.

6 This good news is for ‘all nations’, including us here in Argyll. This is the Christian faith. Mark Jasper, Campbeltown

Scotland are also playing a critical role, answering life-saving emergency calls. I couldn’t be more proud of how my colleagues have responded to these challenges and their desire to help us all through this crisis.
