Argyll and Bute’s first female Lord-Lieutenant
Argyll and Bute will have its first female Lord-Lieutenant later this month with the appointment of Jane MacLeod, confirmed by Her Majesty the Queen on July 14.
The current Lord-Lieutenant, Patrick Stewart CVO MBE WS, is due to retire on July 25 after 33 years of service to the Lieutenancy of Argyll and Bute and nine years as the Queen’s official representative to the area.
Mrs MacLeod was first appointed to the Lieutenancy in 2006 and is currently the Vice Lieutenant for Argyll and Bute. Over the past 14 years she has been involved in all aspects of Lieutenancy business, including playing a key role in Royal visits, participating in the honours system and supporting Argyll and Bute’s 12 Depute Lieutenants.
The Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Stewart said: ‘I was most pleased to hear that Her Majesty the Queen had confirmed the appointment of Jane MacLeod to the role of Lord-Lieutenant. Jane has been a tremendous support to the Lieutenancy and to me over the past several years.
‘She is passionate about seeing Argyll and Bute and its people thrive and has played a very active part in community life over the years. She will make a first-class LordLieutenant and I wish her all the very best in this new role. I know she will bring to it her characteristic dedication and commitment.’
Mrs MacLeod added: ‘It is an immense privilege and honour to be appointed by Her Majesty to serve as her Lord-Lieutenant in Argyll and Bute. I have very much enjoyed working with Patrick and the Lieutenancy over the years. I am absolutely delighted to be appointed and I am very much looking forward to embarking on this new challenge.’
Following Mr Stewart’s retiral on July 25, Mrs MacLeod will become the LordLieutenant for Argyll and Bute. The role involves acting as the official representative of Her Majesty the Queen in Argyll and Bute; assisting in the arrangements for Royal visits to the area; identifying and nominating people and community groups to various national honours and awards schemes; and a range of other ceremonial duties.
