5k-a-day hero David Brown sets sights on finish line

-

Fundraising hero David Brown is well on his way to completing his challenge of running or walking five kilometres, or completing 25 minutes of exercise, every day of 2020 in a bid to raise money for charity as he maintains his fitness.

For every kilometre he completes, David donates 30p of his own money to the charity of his choice for that month. So far, he has donated to the British Heart Foundation, Marie Curie, Helen Gilchrist’s Jolly Monday Show fundraising campaign, the Mairi Semple Cancer Fund, Kintyre Food Bank and charities which raise awareness of mental health, stroke, and primary ciliary dyskinesia.

The charity which will benefit this month is the Campbeltown Christmas Lights Group. This cause was chosen by Alistair Mackay, who runs an annual charity competition in memory of his parents, George and Jenny Mackay, at Campbeltown Bowling Club.

As the competition could not take place this year, David, who is the current club president, decided to make Alistair’s chosen charity this month’s beneficiary.

David is frequently joined by members of the charities he supports during his challenge. This month it was eight bowling club members, Mhairi Reid and Fiona Irwin for the food bank, and Mairi Semple Cancer Fund committee members and their friends in July.

In total, through the combined efforts of the Mairi Semple Cancer Fund committee members and David, £1,131 has been raised for the Kintyre charity which supports cancer relief and research.

David told the Courier: ‘This week will see me enter the last 100 days of my challenge so the finish line is in sight. Thank you to everyone for all the support.’
