Thought for the Week

- With Marilyn Shedden

We were so looking forward to 2020. It sounded good, it had a certain ring to it – a note of optimism, a feeling of excitement, a year of hope.

How differently that panned out. It has been, in many of our experiences, a truly dreadful year. A year of worry, of disappointment, of ill health of death even.

The uncertainty and total confusion of Brexit dominated our lives and gave birth to much uncertainty, a great deal of scepticism and utter confusion. It was a huge thing.

Then along came a tiny thing, infinitesimal even – this ghastly killer called Covid-19.

This unseen danger threatens the whole world. It respects no-one and targets everyone.

Then there have been our own personal disappointments, our own bereavements of physical and emotional loss.

Yet we are a people of hope, a people who can rise above adversity and disaster.

We are a people who differ in our beliefs, who take comfort in different ways. Some of us will turn to our God.

Some will turn to other ways of engaging with our spirits, like mindfulness or meditation.

But whatever works for us, we are a spiritual people and part of us is beyond the physical.

Whatever way we look at this hidden part of us, it is important to engage with it.

We are not physical beings on a spiritual journey.

We are spiritual beings on a physical journey.

Those who have known the pain of physical incarceration have also found the joy of spiritual freedom.

So whatever else this year holds for us, let us delve deep into our spiritual resources and find that well of living water that can refresh our souls and soothe our minds.
