Thought for the Week

- With Marilyn Shedden

I absolutely love whales and my favourite is the beautiful, puppy-like, friendly beluga.

I have just watched the most amazing programme I have ever seen and one which will stay in my memory forever.

John Bishop was involved in the rehabilitation of Little White and Little Grey from captivity to freedom. This took the most amazing time of eight years of meticulous planning with vets, scientists, experts in the study of cetaceans and technical geniuses.

It is the wonderful story of Little White and Little Grey.

They are two beautiful belugas who lived their life in captivity in a tank in China and were used for entertainment.

They were captured as babies, taken from their home and forced into a life of exploitation.

After 10 years in their small tank, freedom came knocking on their door when SEA LIFE got involved.

The SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary provides formerly captive beluga whales with a safe and more natural home.

The aims of the sanctuary are to provide a more natural life for the belugas in their care; to advance knowledge through research and education and to support protection of belugas in the wild.

By leading the way and demonstrating an alternative way of caring for these beautiful animals, they encourage others to consider sanctuaries as a viable alternative.

This change could potentially transform the lives of not only beluga whales but more than 3,000 other whales and dolphins currently housed in traditional captive facilities or performing in shows around the world.

Every creature should live in freedom and should be afforded respect.

No animal should be used for entertainment or abused in any way.

God appointed us as stewards of creation. It is time to take that responsibility seriously.
