Wanted – coastal stories from Kintyre and Gigha
Do you have any stories and memories you would like to share to encourage locals and visitors to explore our coastline?
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) need your help to paint a picture of the area and how this beautiful part of Scotland has had an impact across the globe.
Your story could be one of 20 selected from Kintyre and Gigha to be included in an interactive app and would then be part of an exhibition in key locations across the west coast in 2021.
The Coast that Shaped the World is an ambitious threeyear project which bridges the Visit Scotland Year of Coasts and Waters in 2020 and the Year of Scottish Stories in 2022.
Your stories can be about people, places, events, buildings, industry including folk lore and little-known facts and gems.
Nothing is too big or too small, too detailed, or too vague.
Iain Johnstone of J.I.G events, and event manager of Mull of Kintyre Music Festival, is one of the collators and is keen to hear from anyone who has a story to share.
‘I am delighted to be part of this exciting project as it gives us a chance to revisit old stories and unearth some new ones,’ he told us.
‘There are more than 20 areas across the West Coast of Scotland involved from Arran and Kintyre in the South to Wester Ross and Lewis in the North.
‘Over the next three years these stories from Kintyre and Gigha will become part of a West Coast story bank. The project will then take a number of these stories onto a digital platform and narrate them through spoken word, song, imagery, video, and art so the more stories we get the better.’
The project is led by the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and is being funded through NatureScot’s Natural and Cultural Heritage Fund, with match funding from CalMac and UHI. It is being coordinated by Carron Tobin from ruralDimensions and Graham Hogg from Lateral North.
The story gathering stage of the project runs from now until February 2021 so either fill out the survey with the information or contact Iain and he will help make sure your story is included.
