Town businesses strike back with sign wars puns

- By Hannah O’Hanlon editor@campbeltowncourier.co.uk

Armies of Campbeltown businesses are engaged in a heated battle to outwit and out-pun one another.

The #ToonSignWars began when Campbeltown Picture House declared war on several local businesses, challenging them to ‘get reel’ and join in with the pun war.

In a message written on a chalkboard sign, the cinema asked the café Munch, famed for its sweet milk drinks, to ‘shake things up’ and told alcohol shop Hall’s of Campbeltown – owned by Beinn an Tuirc Distillers, whose name translates as hill of the boar and whose logo features an image of a hog – to join in and not ‘be boars’.

A follow-up sign revealed the cinema ‘had beef’ with McGeachy Butchers and challenged Watt Whisky’s owners to ‘uncork’ themselves and join in. It asked if Glen Scotia Distillery was ‘too mature’ to take part and declared that Café Bluebell was ‘toast’.

It wasn’t long before the businesses that were called out, retaliated and launched their own lyrical attacks.

The challenge proved to be a piece of cake for the town’s eateries and bars – which hit back with some spirited responses – and gift shops – which had things wrapped up in no time. Many of the town’s hairdressers made the cut and rinsed the opposition while beauty salons waxed lyrical.

The Kintyre Shoe Company stepped up and put its heart and ‘sole’ into the challenge, McAllister Shellfish hit back with some snappy puns and children’s favourite Utopia toyed with the enemies. Olfactory Candles came up with some great burns and DM Fabrication showed its ‘metal’ and sparked war with several businesses through some riveting throw downs.

Glen Scotia Distillery baited The Fish Shop to ‘batter in’ with some puns, while the ‘fun guys’ at Kintyre

Mushrooms sent ‘mush love’ to the cinema for coming up with the idea.

Campbeltown Picture House manager Ellen Mainwood told the Courier: ‘I got the idea from a town in Canada that has been doing it for a little while and it struck me that it’s the sort of silly tongue-incheek thing the Campbeltown community would really get behind. Everyone in town – especially business operators – have been so supportive over the last year and what better way to show we love and appreciate each other than to throw a few friendly insults!

‘It has been so much fun seeing the more and more elaborate puns everyone has been coming up with.’
