Pupils celebrate end of year with mini Olympic Games
S1 students celebrated finishing their first year at Campbeltown Grammar School (CGS) by competing for medals in their version of the Olympic Games.
The event, shortly before the end of term, marked the end of a year-long interdisciplinary programme combining lessons in different subjects around common themes.
Pupils worked with specialist teachers in various subjects to explore gender stereotypes.
They also studied the environment, including geography, science and art, and took an in-depth look at India, which involved some Bollywood dancing in PE and cooking naan bread in health and food technology.
The final topic was the
Olympics, which brought together maths, modern languages and PE for a mini version of the major international multi-sport event.
Pupils were divided into eight teams representing different countries – France, Germany, Spain, Italy,
Belgium, Switzerland, Mexico and Australia – each containing eight members.
One member of each team took part in each of the eight activities including rowing, cycling, tug-of-war, boccia and running.
In true Olympic Games style, opening and closing ceremonies were held and the competitors who finished in first, second and third place stood on a podium with their countries’ flags to receive their medals as the national anthems were played.
The overall winning country was Germany, with Switzerland in second place and Australia finishing third.
Each member of the German team won an Olympic T-shirt.
‘The Olympic Games were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone,’ said Betsy Campbell, the school’s depute head teacher, ‘and really brought a much-needed element of fun after what has been a difficult year due to Covid.
‘The inter-disciplinary classes have been a brilliant success and we hope to build on these next term by involving both S1 and S2 pupils.’
