Fun for all at primary school summer fair fundraiser

-

There was fun for all the family when Gigha Primary School and Early Learning Centre held a summer fair fundraiser at the village hall on Saturday May 20.

The event kicked off at 11.15am with a pet show which included dogs, hens, a lamb and a pony taking part.

The overall best in show award was won by pupil Andrew and his grandparents’ two-yearold collie dog Lyla.

Homemade sandwiches and soup were served between noon and 2pm. Crafts made by the pupils and home-baking were also on sale alongside a popular bottle stall.

Pupils learned about chip pan fires from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and enjoyed a chance to soak their teacher Alexandra Vipurs.

A raffle was generously supported by businesses on and off the island.

The fair finished with races on the sports field, with classes for children and adults, before an archery demonstration by pupil Ella and a chance for others to have a go at the sport.

The day was well attended by island residents and visitors from near and far with £1,500 raised. This will be used to help provide new activities and resources for the pupils’ playground.

The school thanks the following for donating raffle prizes, home-baking and their time to help make the day such a success: Bakkafrost, Tan Black, D McNair and Son, Gigha Campsite, Springbank Distillery, Arran Footpaths and Forestry, Big Jessie’s Tearoom, Gigha Activity Centre, Muasdale Stores, The Boathouse, Gigha Natural Skincare, Tayinloan Stores, The Nook, Stuart McDonald Builders and many individuals.

Mrs Vipurs, acting principal teacher, said: “It was great to see so many people turn out to support our wonderful primary school and early learning centre, raising such a huge amount of money. This will make such a difference to our pupils’ playground. Everyone had a lovely day and we hope to make this an annual event. Thank you to everyone who supported us.”
