Driving home a point

-

MORE and more is being said and written about driverless cars and to ignore the idea is folly. It could – and most likely will – happen sometime in the future. It’s just like widespread use of electric vehicles; that was a wild dream a few years back, but now such forms of transport are becoming increasingly common.

To me, the whole concept of a driverless vehicle is cranky. Part of the reason for owning a car is the pleasure of being behind the wheel and in control. It’s the involvement that counts for a great deal.

OK, but some people don’t drive for the fun of it. They just want to get from A to B (and, presumably, from B back to A). It has been suggested that driverless cars could be organised to travel in convoys. We’ve got that already: they’re called trains. Hmm, but there are people who want to make specific journeys that are a little off the beaten track and they simply can’t be bothered to drive. There is also an answer for that: a taxi.
