USEFUL/ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
It is necessary to remove the windscreen wipers and the cross-car plastic scuttle panel/cover sections to reach the upper ends of the front suspension struts. Inevitably, the hollow sections around and beneath the wiper spindles and scuttle panels will be full of accumulated leaf debris, dirt, etc. Take the opportunity to clean out all these areas as they are difficult or impossible to access with the panels fitted. Many of the fasteners that need to be released during this job are seldom touched and seizure may be a problem. The sparing application of penetrating fluid in advance of the work can be very helpful in encouraging movement, but always make sure that such fluid is wiped off all rubber components that may be affected by overspray/spillage. Before releasing the nut securing the top end of each suspension strut to the vehicle’s bodywork, make sure the strut assembly is supported from below. In this operation, and when re-assembling, it is helpful to have an assistant on hand for safety’s sake and to make the workload more manageable. Essential tools and equipment required include a vice suspension coil spring compressor. IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPRESSOR, OR ARE NOT CONFIDENT IN ITS USE, FOR SAFETY’S SAKE ENTRUST SPRING COMPRESSION TO A COMPETENT MECHANIC. A COIL SPRING CAN BE HIGHLY DANGEROUS IF TENSION WITHIN IT IS UNEXPECTEDLY AND SUDDENLY RELEASED. To ensure that all components are reassembled in the correct sequence and orientation, it is advisable to make a few notes, draw a diagram and/or take photographs of the set-up on your vehicle prior to dismantling. This can save time, effort and problems later. The official recommendation is to renew all securing nuts and bolts on reassembly.
