ABS fault

-

I have a 2003 Audi A4 2.4 petrol with an ABS fault. The fault code ‘00283’ is present and a mechanic has changed the left front sensor three times thinking it was faulty. I have now checked the reluctor ring in case it was damaged, but it is in perfect condition. I have also inspected the wiring for breaks, but all seems fine. I tried to clear the fault code, but this took six goes to clear. I started the car and let it idle and, after 1.30 minutes without the car moving, the ABS and ESP lights came on, accompanied by the same fault code. Am I right in thinking there is a possible ABS module fault or is there something I am missing? Mark Deane

The definition of the code ‘00283’ is a fault with the front left ABS wheel sensor, with one of three possible reasons. There may be an electrical fault in the circuit, an open circuit or a short circuit, or else it may be that the signal is outside the required specifications. As the last of these faults is normally due to a failed sensor, which has been replaced, I suspect the next most likely cause is within the wiring loom. Again, you have checked this and I assume that was done with a meter to confirm that there is not a high resistance or short within the circuit.

You have not specified which scanner you used to read off the code, but a VAG system scanner would also give you a second code. This will be either ‘G47’, suggesting a mechanical fault, or ‘J104’, indicating a control module failure. If the ‘J104’ code has been flagged, it confirms the problem is within the module. If this is the case, it may be possible to get the module repaired by either

www.ecutesting.com or www.bba-reman.com. Taking this route will avoid having to recode the new unit to the vehicle.
