Fitted with a DPF or DMF

I have seen a 2009 Audi 1.9 TDI 113bhp with 77,000 miles on the clock. Do you know whether this vehicle was fitted with a DPF – I have heard that the PD engine wasn’t equipped to run with one – and will it have a DMF? Gerry Birtles

Having supplied the vehicle registration number, I was able to carry out a few checks for you. Although the vehicle was registered in March 2009, it is a 2008 model and has the PD engine with the code BRB. According to Autodata, this vehicle is equipped with a DPF, and according to the data I have, it is also fitted with a DMF.

The information you’ve heard about the PD engine is probably because it uses a cam to operate the injector, unlike electronic injectors. These can't be operated for a long period to over-fuel the engine and instigate DPF regeneration. The regeneration system on these engines uses a separate injector fitted directly to the exhaust.
