Power steering fluid change

-

Can you please advise me the best way of replacing the power steering fluid on my 2003 Audi S3/8L series that has covered 73,500 miles? Would you recommend flushing or cleaning the system and what would you use? Alan Job

The system on your S3 is described by Audi as being maintenance-free, but, like you, I feel changing the fluid will give prolonged life to the system. The system should not need flushing – simply removing the two banjo connections on the steering rack and draining down the fluid should suffice. As the steering uses central hydraulic fluid, this should drain down quite easily. New seals should be fitted to the two connections when replacing them. The fluid can then be topped up before bleeding out the steering system by turning the steering wheel from lockto-lock twice with the engine running. Leave the system to settle for a couple of minutes before checking the fluid level.
