Brake repair advice

-

Can you advise please on the following? The vehicle is a Peugeot 206CC, petrol 1600cc on a 03-registration. I want to renew the rear brake discs and pads and have bought a clockwise-turning wind-back tool, as recommended in a recent CM article. According to the Haynes manual, you also have to clamp the rear brake flexi-hose going to the caliper you are working on, then undo the bleed screw on that caliper to ease the back-pressure on the system, etc, for when you wind in the piston. Having seen this Youtube clip: http://

bit.ly/1ndfskv, I was gobsmacked to see the person retract the piston into the caliper with pipe grips! I have used G-clamps before on older cars, but this model has a sophisticated ABS brake system. So do I need to clamp the hose, undo the bleed screw and use the wind-back tool as per the Haynes manual, or am I missing the point? Lesley Adams The first comment I would make is that the brake pads in the video were front pads, not rear ones. The rear pistons will not simply push back and will have to be wound in. The tool you have purchased will not, according to my data, fit the Bosch caliper and the tool recommended by Peugeot is a pair of FACOM D60A type pliers. These are used to wind the piston back into the caliper in a clockwise direction. Ensure the slot in the piston is positioned correctly.

There is no need to clamp off the brake hose or loosen the bleed nipple. The only recommendation made by Peugeot is that the brake fluid reservoir should be partially drained using a clean syringe; this is to allow sufficient room for the returning fluid. Once the new pads and discs are fitted, the brake pedal should be pumped several times to ensure the new pads are correctly positioned, then the handbrake should be operated ten times.
