Key result

My 2002 Volvo V70 petrol auto refuses to start. The starter and battery are fine, but no current is evident at the starter solenoid terminal when the ignition is turned. There’s also no response in either ‘Park’ or ‘Neutral’ positions on the gear selector. No fault codes are present after scanning.

There is only one ignition key. If the key is faulty, does this affect the starter circuit – ie, non-crank or crank not-start? How can I test the ignition key?

When you say there is no current at the starter solenoid terminal, I am assuming that you are talking about the low current activating terminal. If so, give this terminal its own separate 12V feed to see if the engine then cranks and starts. Tell me the result and we will take it from there.

I’ve done this and the engine cranks but does not start. Could this be a key fault and how do I test the key?

The immobiliser instructions courtesy of Autodata are as follows: System arms in five seconds after switching ignition OFF. Switch ignition ON. Ensure clock LED illuminates for 3-5 seconds. If LED flashes at regular intervals for approximately one minute: Key code not recognised. Remove the key. Wait five seconds and try again. New keys can only be programmed using diagnostic equipment.

Thank you so much! It was a key fault.
