ENGINE OIL RENEWAL

-

10 ENGINE UNDERTRAY

Before the old engine oil can be drained, the undertray needs to be detached. This is secured with a mixture of quick-release crosshead screws (turn them anticlockwise, but do not remove them) and Torx T25 screws. Some fittings may have corroded and seized, but they can be repaired.

11 DRAIN ENGINE OIL

Position a five-litre or larger container underneath the sump. The A4’s sump plug usually requires a 17mm or 19mm socket to undo it. Leave the oil to drain out for 15-20 minutes. IVC always fit a new sump plug and washer, which are available from Audi and stockists such as GSF or ECP.

12 NEW ENGINE OIL

The A4’s 2.0-litre diesel engine requires 4.75 litres of 5W-30 fully-synthetic oil. However, there is no dipstick to check the level. Instead, after pouring the new oil into the engine via the filler cap, refit the cap and start the engine...

13 CHECK THE OIL LEVEL

…and check the oil level via the vehicle’s dashboard display once the oil has warmed. You won’t be able to rev the engine beyond 2500rpm until it has warmed up. We found it took almost half-an-hour before information on the engine oil level could be displayed.

14 EXTRACTING EXCESS

If too much oil is displayed, there are two methods of extracting the excess. There is the old dipstick access tube, which allows oil to be sucked out. Otherwise, the sump plug can be released to drain a little oil. Both methods involve guesswork as to how much should be removed.
