Airbag light

-

With an MOT due soon on my 2005 Rover 75, sure as eggs the tester will move the seat and the airbag light will come on. I am about to remove the seat to get at the connections and, for safety reasons, the battery will be disconnected. In order to preserve the radio code, I have purchased a Draper Memory Saver, which requires independent power. The ECU will still be supplied with power and, on removing the seat, the airbag could still operate. In the Oct 2016 issue, you advised Michael Kenny about this issue, but with no mention of the subsidiary power supply. WHA Burgess Unfortunately, by using a memory saver you will be supplying power to the auxiliary systems, which will defeat the object of disconnecting the battery. The main purpose of a memory saver is to retain the code in the radio to prevent the need to programme it when replacing the battery. If you do not have the radio code for your vehicle, it can be obtained from this website http://bit.

ly/2gcxaoa for a nominal cost (prices do vary and they will inform you how much it will be before proceeding); the radio will need to be removed to access the serial number. Once you have the radio code, there will be no worry about disconnecting the battery and you’ll avoid accidental activation of the airbag. After disconnecting the battery, you should wait for around 10 minutes before starting work.

As the airbag light is not on and you have no current issues, it is unlikely that airbag connections under the seat should pose a problem. A quick clean of the connections may help, but unless you had previous problems, as Michael Kenny did, I would not be too concerned.
