Automatic transmission fluid

-

I have a 15-year-old Rover 75 2.0-litre automatic. During my 12-year ownership, the transmission oil has never been changed or even topped up, yet the gear shifts are still smooth. However, in view of the car’s age and mileage (100,000 miles), I would like to renew the gearbox oil, filter and sump gasket, etc.

A local auto transmission specialist has told me the filter cannot be accessed to be changed and quoted £180 + VAT to drain and refill it. I know that transmission fluid is not cheap and that labour charges in my area are high, but does this seem a fair price and is it a good idea if the filter cannot be changed? What is the issue with replacing the filter and should I just leave well alone until problems arise? Michael Kenney I am assuming you have either the JF403E four-speed JATCO ’box or the JF506E five-speed ’box. The correct fluid for this is JF403E Automatic Transmission Fluid (part no VYK000040). This is available from Rimmer Bros at £41.58 for five litres. Your gearbox should take four litres, but it would be advisable to change it twice to help flush through the torque convertor, which cannot be drained.

Your local transmission specialist is correct in saying that the filter cannot be changed and that this is only accessible with the gearbox removed and stripped down. The filter is a gauze element and not designed as a serviceable item; it should only need replacing during a full gearbox overhaul.

The price quoted does sound higher than I would expect. As the job is quite simple, it should be possible to find a garage that will carry out the task for less than this. I would certainly change the oil to prolong the life of the gearbox and my only word of caution would be to ensure the correct oil is used.
