Spark plug change

-

When I started working in the trade, getting 12,000 miles out of a spark plug meant you were doing well. These days, plugs are designed to do much higher mileages, and this seems to be taken into account by engine designers, who do not always make it easy to replace them!

For a large engine, the V8 5.0 lump in this 2002 BMW M5 E39 had spark plugs that were quite accessible. Once the air filters were out of the way, the top cover on both banks could be removed, leaving only the coil packs to be lifted off before accessing the spark plugs.

The rubber sleeves of the coil packs did stick to the porcelain of the spark plugs, but this was remedied by a long piece of wire fashioned into a hook and slid down the side to gently lift the edge of the rubber and ease it off. The rear plug on the nearside bank can be a bit tricky due to limited access, but as long as the engine has cooled before starting the job – to avoid burnt hands! – this is not a big deal.

?? ?? With the air filters and top covers removed, only the rear plug on the nearside bank is slightly tricky to access.
