Wastegate rattle

-

I have a 2009 Vauxhall Astra special 1.7 CDTI with a Z17DTH engine. I have an issue with the turbo wastegate actuator/solenoid making a loud rattling and metallic noise when idling. The noise goes when revs are applied or gentle pressure is applied to the wastegate rod.

The car seems to be running fine, other than a slightly louder than normal turbo whistle at around 2200rpm, and the actuator seems to open and close as it should when revs are applied. Is the actuator a replaceable part or would a complete new turbo be required? Lewis Ford The turbo on the Z17DTH engine should not have a wastegate, but will be a variable vane turbo. The rod you refer to should operate the variable vane system.

I would start by disconnecting the rod and control unit, then attempt to manually move the operating lever into the turbo. If this does not move easily, it indicates that the vanes are sticking. As you say the vehicle is running fine, the problem may just be wear in the connecting pin; this can be checked when the linkage is disconnected.
