Hard-wiring a dashcam

-

I recently purchased an RAC 05 dashacam. Is it possible to hard-wire this to my 2009 BMW 318i through the fusebox or ignition, thus freeing up the cigarette lighter socket and leaving the dashcam permanently connected? If this is a viable option, what parts, fuses and back-up batteries would be required, and where and how should the wires be fitted?

I have looked at Nextbase hard-wiring kits in both Halfords and Maplin, but have been advised they will not fit the RAC 05 dashcam due to one connector being a mini USB and the other a micro USB. CR Hawes The problem with direct-wiring into many modern vehicles is finding a 12V connection as many systems now run on a reduced voltage through the Can-bus system.

The easiest option would be to purchase a cigarette socket outlet that can be hard-wired into the vehicle, leaving the main lighter socket free. This unit costs around £12.50 and includes an inline fuse for safety. It can be wired into the vehicle either by connecting it to the existing lighter socket wiring or by taking a feed from the fusebox, which is located behind the passenger glovebox on your BMW.

The RAC 05 does have an internal battery which should last for 20 minutes of recording, and a parking mode allowing it to continue monitoring while the vehicle is parked and then start recording if it detects an impact.
