With even the newest Clio 2s being almost a decade old, they’re not expensive to buy. Top dollar is about £2200 for a 2008/2009 Campus, but these don’t really make sense when you can get an older and better equipped Dynamique or Privilege for substantially less.

Pre-2001 cars are showing their age and are firmly rooted in banger territory. Spend £300 upwards for something passable with an MOT. If you shop around, you can be behind the wheel of a perfectly nice example for less than £600.

There are hundreds of examples available at the traders’ favourite price of £995, most of which are post-2001 facelifted cars. These are a mixed bag: some will be tired examples tarted up to look half-decent, while others will be really nice cars. This is the area where, if you’re in the market for a first car or cheap runabout, you should spend your money, but not without seeking out a good example.

There are hundreds on the market, so there’s no excuse for compromising on a poor or average one.
