SAFETY FIRST

-

BATTERY OFF Always disconnect the battery before renewing the timing belt to avoid turning the engine.

KNOW YOUR NUTS Don’t mix up the nuts and bolts you remove. Note where they should be fitted. On the Galaxy in our photographs, the wrong bolts had been fitted for the front timing belt covers (one was missing) and the water pump.

MANUAL ROTATION After fitting the new timing belt, tensioner and idler, manually rotate the engine via the crankshaft pulley, completing two full turns before rechecking all timing marks. Never turn the engine via the camshaft.

LOCK IT Do not move the crankshaft or camshaft after the timing belt has been removed as this may alter the timing of the engine. Use locking tools to prevent these components from moving. LEAKS Check for oil and coolant leaks when renewing the timing belt and renew any gaskets or seals that are leaking.
