SCORE 3/5
Produced in 2005 by the largest manufacturer of TPMS in the world, the Airaware TPMS 6559467 was the only tested kit equipped with the most modern all-rubber snap-on tyre valve, which means that it does not rely on a nut to clamp the sensor to the wheel rim.
Despite being the oldest unit on test, it has been upgraded continuously. The sensors are of a very high quality and pairing them to the well designed, albeit bulky and cheap-looking, head-unit was easy. Promising results were yielded at the start of the test: the headunit’s non-solar LCD screen powered-up instantly upon sensing movement within the cabin and yielded instantaneous audible and visual low pressure warnings. However, because the screen then scrolls through readings for each tyre, a one-glance check on the status of all four wheels is not possible. We were also concerned that, during our 50-mile test, the sensors lost communication with the head-unit three times, although it corrected itself within a few miles. We understand that a redesigned head-unit will be available shortly, which Schrader says will address these deficiencies.
