VERDICT
With prices that range from £99 to £210, all of the electronic TPMS kits tested were accurate to within 2psi, according to the calibrated gauge’s reading. Other than Fit2go, none of the systems recalibrates automatically, when the wheels are rotated front-to-rear. Most systems require you to locate the head-unit/display within the car, either on top of the dashboard or to a vertical fascia panel.
The solar-powered screens offer the best fit-and-forget option, because they require neither manual intervention, nor periodic battery replacement. The solar-powered Fit2go head-unit mounts discreetly on the windscreen but can provide audible and flashing lamp warnings only – nevertheless, it’s worth considering if easeof-use and simple installation is a priority. The Tireinsight system presents an excellent mobile phone-based TPMS choice, but the Tirepal Solar4 kit is the best kit for a low-mileage user on a budget. Our winner, the Steelmate TP-S1I, offers the best balance of features, price and security.
All makers, however, emphasise that the technology must not replace regular manual pressure checks.
