A common fault on these cars is that the lower suspension arm rear bushes tend to split or tear, resulting in a rubbery squeak from underneath on braking or when the car goes over bumps. During the service, check for signs of perishing and use a bar as a lever to see if there’s any significant movement in the arm. In addition, water leaks can occur behind the engine – there’s a pipe with a billet connection that tends to come off with age, although it can be repaired with a hose clip. If you regularly see a small pool of fluid under the car, this could well be the cause. RICHARD GUNN Special Contributor
