CENTRE CONSOLE & CUPHOLDERS

1 The first job is to remove the gearknob and gearlever gaiter. They’re just clipped in, so you can use a small flat-blade screwdriver if you take care not to damage the plastic trim surround.

2 Next, use the screwdriver to flip up the semi-circular trim cover on the passenger side of the console, and then undo this single Torx T8 screw. Collect the screws in a safe place.

3 At the front of the console, there’s a plastic rivet on each side – pull out the centres using a small pair of pliers, then remove the main rivet with the screwdriver. The front will now be loose.

4 Use the screwdriver to flip up the small panel at the back of the console where the second cigar lighter and auxiliary socket fits – there’s no need to disconnect it, as it will fit back down the hole out of the way.

5 Disconnect this electrical plug that takes power to the front cigar lighter and the light for the ashtray (if fitted). Do this by squeezing the outer tabs together and pulling, although it can be reluctant to move.

6 Use the screwdriver to remove the rear cover of the console – it is just clipped in and is easy to detach (but not so easy to refit). This reveals a pair of 10mm nuts securing the rear of the console to the transmission tunnel. Undo the nuts.

7 Pull the handbrake gaiter up and out of the way – there’s no need to detach it completely. Remove the single 10mm nut securing the centre of the console to the transmission tunnel.

8 Finally, remove the two 10mm bolts that are accessed from within the gearlever hole and pull the console backwards and out. You may dislodge the main trim panel around the radio and aircon control panel, so make sure to refit it before attaching the new console.

9 With the radio trim panel in place, the new console and armrest fits in just as the old console came out. Take your time to get it into exactly the right place, loosely fitting all nuts and bolts before tightening them all at the end. A major improvement!
