While your welding technique will depend on the demands of a particular job, try to keep the gap constant between the torch and area to be welded; the pictured space of between 8-15mm is about right.

Plan how you will move, before welding. Move your body from its core, keeping your feet fixed, and ensure that your movement is both smooth and comfortable before commencing the weld. Minimise fume exposure and maximise visibility.
