Conclusion

-

All of these solar-powered helmets (the Sealey also has battery back-up) have similar specifications, which include a grinding function that offers post-welding protection for the entire face, but closer inspection reveals subtle variations. Technically, all of the tested helmets work as intended and none of them gave inadequate eye and face protection, but there were significant differences in head-strap adjustability and comfort. For non-contact lens wearers, the Sealey and Siegen provide the option to install a separate prescription lens. The Clarke is a good mid-range offering, while the Sealey has superior specification but is let down by its high price. The Draper offers superior physical protection thanks to its largest visor, with good comfort and build quality. However, our test proves that not one helmet can be recommended for all, so try before you buy, if you intend to weld regularly.
