FRONT BRAKES

-

With the outer brake pad removed, we realised it was more worn 4 than we had initially suspected when had we visually inspected them in situ. We estimated there was roughly a few thousand miles left in the pad, so decided to renew all of the fronts. Although we will be renewing the front brake pads in the future, 5 we decided to clean the retaining pins as we had to reassemble the old brakes for the present and reuse the old pins. Having cleaned them, they should be easy to extract next time.

At first sight, the handbrake shoes 7 looked to be in good condition. On closer inspection, we could see that the braking surface had started to crack. We decided that all of the handbrake shoes would need to be renewed. We reassembled the brakes, planning 8 to renew the handbrake shoes in the future. The caliper carrier was cleaned with a wire brush, file and screwdriver to remove all traces of dirt and ensure the brake pads moved smoothly along it. The caliper slider bolts were also 9 cleaned and coated in rubber grease to ensure the caliper moves freely and operates the outer brake pad. We’ll need to strip the rear brakes in the future, but the cleaning and greasing will save time.
