Airbag light issue

-

I have a question relating to my 2005 Peugeot 206 2.0 HDI estate. I have an airbag light which I’ve now come to know as the ‘cold weather light’. It never comes on while driving, only the first time you start the car when it has been cold overnight. Switching off the engine and starting it up again makes it go away, but I am curious to know why this could be.

It has been on a Snap-on reader – I forget the exact code, but it referred to ‘no speed detected’. The code has been erased before and is recurring. Now it is warmer I doubt I will see it for a while, but anything below about 10°C makes it come back on in a morning.

I have heard that a common issue with this model is the airbag unit on the steering wheel, which cost about £160 reconditioned, so I want to avoid this if possible. Are there any cheaper avenues to explore before taking this option? Chris Button

One of the common issues with this car is the airbag connecting unit on the steering wheel, also known as the clockspring. Another frequent problem is failure of the connecting plugs beneath the front seats. If a vehicle has more than one regular driver, the constant moving of the seat can affect the electrical connection beneath. Unplugging and cleaning the connections before reconnecting them can often rectify the problem and is a cheap and easy option to carry out as a first move.

Without a specific code, it is difficult to narrow down the area of the problem and unfortunately I cannot link the ‘no speed detected’ code to an airbag fault.
