Gearbox level

-

My 2006 Ford Focus 1596cc Zetec auto doesn’t seem to have a dipstick for the transmission fluid, so I haven’t been able to check the level since I’ve had it. There's not much room around the gearbox and it’s low down in the engine bay, making it hard to see. It’s not mentioned in the Haynes manual. Can you help? Roy Bailey

According to the data I have, the dipstick should be located in the centre top area of the gearbox, just below the engine side of the air filter box. It is hidden behind the air ducting that runs from the air filter to the inlet manifold.

Although the top should be yellow, it is possible that this is now a murky black or that the plastic top may have broken off – but by looking down into the area behind the air ducting you should be able to see it from above.

If you do need to top the gearbox up, the correct oil spec is WSS-M2C919-E.
