PARTS QUALITY

-

 Low-grade and counterfeit parts are rife. Springs/dampers are no different. KYB reports that its in-house tests of budget brands showed that, in order to reduce the price, costs are shaved and quality nose-dives. KYB has found reduced corrosion protection on the piston rod surface, which increases the risk of leaks and an accelerated reduction in performance and safety. It has also uncovered weaker joints and poor welds, which compromise the strength of the suspension unit.

ZF Aftermarket (which owns the Sachs brand) questions performance standards, to which these budget brands have been tested, if any at all. It also queries the quality of the raw materials, as well as the manufacturing and assembly methods. The company argues that all of these aspects influence how the parts behave during a critical avoidance manoeuvre, or in an impact.

As dampers are safety-critical parts, it is wise not to buy on price alone and, should you intend to keep your car for as long as possible, avoid false economies, by insisting on OE quality parts. This will ensure not only enhanced longevity, but also optimum performance.

?? ?? Do not buy the cheapest parts you can find. These two dampers are for the same car but the bottom one is from KYB, an OE manufacturer. Compare the welding with the cheap non-branded alternative above it.
