CAR BASED PICK UPS

Or utes if you’re feeling Antipodean. All four are real, and two even made it into production

-

The new one Honda Civic Type R Pickup Concept (2018)

Engineers in the Swindon factory’s in-house Synchro Motorsport operation butchered a pre-production Civic Type R to create a mule for carrying around Honda garden equipment, and maybe taking the fastest front-drive pick-up record at the Nürburging. Capable of 165mph and sub-6.0sec 0–62mph.

The ultimate Aussie one Vauxhall VXR8 Maloo LSA (2017)

It’s now been killed o—, but this was your last chance to get a brutish Aussie ute in the UK. Supercharged 6.2-litre V8 cranked out 536bhp and was able to carry 500kg of beer/shrimp/ dingos (other stereotypes available upon request) that would get thrown sideways the moment you looked at the throttle.

The April Fool’s one BMW M3 pick-up (2011)

It may have been created for a silly press release sent out on April Fool’s Day, but BMW actually made it and let people drive it. BMW told us it would carry 450kg in the loadbay, and it was the irst-ever M3 to have a trailer hitch. Just one was made.

The tax-dodging one Subaru BRAT (1977 1994)

A pick-up based on the pre-Impreza Leone, the Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter was originally a two-seater modiied to include two jump seats on the loadbay to get around the US’s 25 per cent tax on light commercial vehicles

instead of 2.5 per cent for passenger cars. Crafty.
