CAR (UK)

So last century

Mulling over the April edition I’m wondering if you should rename the magazine Fossil Car. I’ve been a reader for 40-plus years and liked CAR’s forward-looking attitude. But now it seems rooted in the past. I’m bored with the endless parade of look-at-me loud metal and increasingly desperate justification of fossil cars/anti-EV stance. I’m sure you’ll get further justifications from readers for their fossils (although I bet none still use a Nokia 3310), but they’re misguided. The Tesla S 75D I drive now has kept my attention longer than any other car I’ve owned, including an E46 M3. Do I miss the engine noise? Not one bit. Do I love the instant torque, constantly managing the throttle to drive on one pedal? Love it. Is it a bit of a boat? Maybe, but on a wet, muddy, rutted A40 in Gloucestershire it’ll still pass a McLaren 540C. Is it better for the planet? With the equivalent of 90-110mpg on green electricity, of course. Can it do a 140-mile round-trip commute? No worries. Do I love the looks? Yes, yes, yes. And so do others, it seems, ignoring parked AMGs and Lamborghinis (despite much engine revving) and wanting to talk to me. Which brings me to the i4. Oh BMW, why something so dull and old-fashioned after the i3 and i8? Colin Bloodworth

Good to hear you’re enjoying the Model S, Colin. As you’d imagine, plenty of time and thought goes into trying to balance each issue, and sorry if you feel we’re too fuel-heavy at the moment. CAR hasn’t been slow to EVs, though. We profiled Elon Musk before the Model S launched, and we’ve run numerous EV cover stories. BM
