BMW’s virtual gatekeeper
Geofencing puts hybrids into electric mode when it matters most. Here’s how. By Jake Groves
As more cities impose clean-air zones, car makers have responded by incorporating geofencing tech into new hybrids. BMW is one of the leaders. All its future plugin hybrids (PHEVs) will have geofencing tech as standard, while the tech will be sent as an over-the-air update to nearly-new BMW PHEVs running the OS 7 version of iDrive infotainment.
HOW DOES THE CAR GET THE DATA?
Geofencing uses GPS data (from your sat-nav) to create a virtual geographic boundary, and ensure a plug-in hybrid switches from combustion engine to electric-only power on entry to a clean-air zone – provided, that is, there’s enough charge.
IN TOO DEEP?
If your battery is running low – perhaps you’ve changed route, or congestion has worsened – the car will re-engage the engine rather than leave you stranded.
