CAR (UK)

I’ve bought every issue of CAR since I was around 15 years old, and I’m now 69. Recently I have become rather fed up with all the hypercars, supercars and now saloons with ridiculous power outputs. My friend has just bought a DB11 V12, and while it’s stunning he just won’t be able to use its 630bhp anywhere really. I don’t want to burst his bubble but it’s hardly very useful.

Also, all the cars I like are at least £100,000 to buy, without extras, and are worth half that within two years. Who can afford this? Aston Martin offered my mate £50k off a new DB11!

No, the car world has gone mad, and we’ll be driving electric cars within five or six years. I got a taste of this recently in Holland, where they have reduced the speed limit to 100km/h between the hours of 7am and 6pm, to reduce range anxiety. My last car was a Cayenne GTS, which was great fun, but now I’ve got a Velar 3.0-litre diesel. Lots of torque and easy to drive. Old and boring? I might still get a Caterham…
