THOSE LAP TIMES…
Just two-tenths cover the top three. The McLaren is the only car here on slicks but it’s only just quicker than the featherweight Atom and Rapture. Were this a faster, more flowing track, the Radical’s downforce may have elevated it to the top of the table.
SUPER STABLE MAC
The McLaren is at home in Turn 4, a downhill sweeper: rock-solid under braking and flat under load. ‘The gearshift is really good too,’ says Jamie. ‘Most road cars won’t give you a downshift from high revs – this will.’
ATOMIC KITTEN
The Ariel feels great through this kind of turn; stable but playful and adjustable. Its balance is slightly to understeer if you don’t trail the brakes into the right-hander, though it doesn’t understeer when Jamie’s driving…
THE 420R, SLOW?!
In isolation, the 420R would feel absurdly accelerative along the back straight but the McLaren and Radical warp perspective and make the Caterham feel merely brisk. Until you get to a corner...
TYRES ON FIRE
The hairpin has a kinked approach, so you’re braking, downshifting and turning. The Radical picks up a bit of understeer mid-corner but is mighty on the exit, where the Lotus and Jannarelly wheelspin merrily.
LET’S GO ROUND AGAIN
The Lotus Exige needs care with the shift from third to fourth here; it can’t be rushed. Its brakes are strong and easy to modulate at the end of the straight; Jamie strafes it into Turn 1 in a four-wheel drift.
NEVER ENDING
This is a loooong corner. Takes a couple of laps to suss out the best line. The Jannarelly struggles for traction with its inside-rear wheel but you don’t mind the revs rising when they sound so good.
