Llangain

Mrs Teresa MacWilliam It is with deep sadness that we report the sudden passing of Mrs Teresa MacWilliam of Penparc, Heol Smyrna, Llangain, on Tuesday, June 9, aged 94. She was the widow of the Very Revd Dr Gordon MacWilliam, former Dean of St David’s cathedral and head of religious studies at Trinity College (now UWTSD), Carmarthen, and mother of the late Andrew MacWilliam. A short service consisting of a psalm, reading and a hymn, namely, ‘Arglwydd gad im dawel orffwys’ was held outside her home on Friday, June 19 at 11am. The officiant was the Revd Canon Ann Howells, local vicar and Area Dean of the Local Ministry Area (Bro Sancler). Neighbours and friends gathered along the pavement outside Penparc. The funeral cortege then made its way along Heol Smyrna and down to Smyrna crossroads with Iwan Evans, the funeral director walking with great dignity ahead of the hearse. Further residents had gathered to pay their last respects at the main crossroads in the village centre. A private burial for family and a few invited mourners due to the Covid-19 pandemic took place in St Cain’s parish church graveyard where prayers were said and a hymn was sung, namely, ‘The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended’ and terminating with the Nunc Dimittis, a canticle in Christian liturgy taken from Luke’s Gospel, chapter 2. In the absence of an organ, both hymns were sung to the accompaniment of pre-recorded background organ music thanks to technological expertise of the funeral directors. At the graveside, the vicar was assisted by the Revd Canon Leigh Richardson, Sub-Dean and Precentor of St David’s cathedral. Leigh, a native of St David’s had been a choir boy at the cathedral when Dr MacWilliam was Dean there during the 1980s. The chief mourners were Mrs Sarah Baulch (daughter-in-law), Rachel MacWilliam (granddaughter) and Philip Cranmer, Ian and Verity Baulch and Marlene Lewis (lifelong friend). The other attendees in the graveyard were: Andrea (Bowen) Hill of Cefnbryn (formerly Avoca), Maureen

Roberts of Aelybryn, Mary Hughes of Dan y Deri and Derek Thomas of Cwmnantyreira. David Rees, MBE of Dol-y-Dderwen, however, was unable to attend due to a sudden family bereavement. The bearers were chosen by Glanmor D. Evans & Son because of the present pandemic. A native of Valley on Anglesey and of Irish descent, Teresa trained for the teaching profession at Bangor Normal College in the mid 1940s where she became president of the Students’ Union. Soon after her marriage to Gordon, they moved to Carmarthen and then to Llangain in 1965 where they built their new home above the Williams’s farm at Penycoed. For many years, she taught at Ysgol y Dderwen in Carmarthen. She was and an integral part of Llangain church as a faithful member for 55 years along with being active in other village activities. ‘Mrs Mac’, as she was affectionately known and of a pleasant disposition, had been a loyal and supportive spouse to her eminent and humble clergyman husband. This sense of duty and joy would include long periods abroad when ‘Dr Mac’ would act as a ‘Relief Priest’ in places such as Lanzarote, a canary island off the coast of West Africa and Tunisia in North Africa while the priests were away for various reasons. Indeed, both loved travelling and visited countries world wide including as far as South America. The family acknowledge with gratitude every expression of kindness and sympathy. Donations in memory, if so desired, to Crossroads Sir Gar or The Alzheimer’s Society received by the aforementioned undertakers. This specific Service of Thanksgiving marked an end of an era in village life, namely, the MacWilliam Era!

Church news Next Sunday we celebrate Trinity 6 and unfortunately Llansteffan Church still cannot open. The number of helpers available do not meet the required risk assessment guidelines. Please remember that your churchwardens and the Ministry Team are still here to help and advise and you can take part in virtual services on Facebook or request telephone communication. Please contact us at any time if you need to talk.

Fiesta Week It is disappointing but not entirely unexpected that this year’s Fiesta week will not be happening. All the associated events will have to be cancelled as it is not possible to use the Memorial Hall yet. Social distancing rules and the vastly increased hygiene precautions make events non starters. The football club committee have decided there will be no mock mayor election nor carnival but we hope we can all be back stronger than ever in 2021. However I assume our current mock mayor Roger Davies will continue for another year so watch this space for any events he might be planning.

Anyone for tennis? Both tennis courts are now ready for use and as there has been an increase in the numbers wishing to play the nets are up on both courts. There is no fee and it is hoped that they can remain unlocked but if you find a court is locked please call on Amanda at the Beach Shop. Telephone number 241600.

Pub and restaurant and events Since the lockdown in March, there obviously hasn’t been any public events in Cwmdu to report on, but now there are talks about the lifting of the regulations, Cwmdu is considering how we can safely reopen the pub at least, by making use of the pub garden across the road. Keep an eye open for information on our website – www.cwmdu.org or on Facebook. Shop and Post Office These are continuing to be a great asset to the community by supplying essential goods and services. If an order for collection or delivery is required, please contact Lesley at the shop on 01558 685156 or email shop@cwmdu.com with your shopping list. Thanks to the volunteers who have helped to keep the shop open and everyone supplied.

Fire On June 24 a devastating fire swept through the farmhouse at Gellicefn-yRhos, Cwmdu, completely destroying it. Idris, Huw and Anika Davies are all safe, thankfully, and are staying in local accommodation until the house can be rebuilt.

Lottery Despite the lockdown, the Cymdeithas Cwmdu Lottery has continued to operate, but many participants have not been into the shop to top up their contributions and some to collect their winnings. Some winnings have been reinvested to cover these deficits, but we respectfully request all participants that their payments can be brought up to date. Thank you.

Lions help out Ammanford Lions Club have made more than £850 of donations to local organisations over the lockdown period. In April, the Lions were able to donate £450 to Amman Valley Makerspace towards their work in making face shields for the NHS. Latterly, they have also donated £200 to both Ammanford Foodbank and Amman Valley Foodbank. Whilst most Lions were stuck at home, members who were able to get out and about were also able to top up the “Message in a Bottle” stocks, and also held a socially-distanced working party at Amanford Train Station to clear rubbish and tidy flower beds. One member has also helped the NHS out by making headbands for Glangwili Hospital chemotherapy department’s nursing staff. If you would like to support Ammanford

Lions’ fundraising efforts, you can donate by joining their 50 Club, which costs £4 a month, or by donating via PayPal Giving, the link is on their Facebook page. For any other details, please contact the secretary on 01269 851171.

Bereavement Deepest condolences are expressed to all the family following the sad passing away, peacefully on June 23 at Glangwili Hospital, of John Flatley, of Llys y Deri, Hopkinstown, Ammanford. John was the loving husband of Jean, dear father of Joanne and Julia, and a respected father-in-law and proud grandad.

Meals on Wheels Penygroes Cafe,Y Cwtsh Cafe, is providing a local Meals on Wheels service in the Amman and Gwendraeth Valleys; if you are elderly, shielding, alone or self-isolating at this difficult time and need a hot meal (Monday to Friday), please get in touch with Amanda on 07976 910634 or contact cooke.amanda28@gmail.com for more details.

Donation Members of Ammanford’s WASPI group have made a kind donation of a £100 towards Amman Valley Foodbank recently, a very nice gesture, ladies.

Sad state of affairs Vandalism is sadly alive and well during this pandemic, with the recent disturbing theft of vital life-saving equipment from the riverside at Betws Park during the warm weather spell; to think that someone has gone out of their way to take this apparatus, which could save someone’s life in the event of an emergency, is appalling.

Shed thefts Residents in the Ammanford area are being urged to lock and keep an eye on outdoor sheds, after a recent string of thefts of bikes, tools, garden equipment and other items from Myddynfych and Heol Marlais during the early hours.

Meals on Wheels plea Cwmamman Meals on Wheels, throughout the past few months of this horrible pandemic, has been consistently serving an average of 50 people each and every week with hot meals, thanks to our wonderful volunteers who go out and about in rain or shine, and also the wonderful girls at Garnant Day Centre who prepare the food. However, the group is now appealing for some volunteers who can step up and help to ensure this important service can continue for the time being, after one regular volunteer had to give up to return to her university studies. Please contact Kevin on 01269 825438 if you can help out.

Ysgol y Bedol It was lovely to see more of our pupils return to school last week for their check-in sessions; some very happy children returned to catch up with their friends; some enjoyed a game of bingo and had fun outdoors and in the garden.

Gwobr y Bedol Now that the time has come for school to re-open ,Ysgol y Bedol’s “Gwobr y Bedol” is coming to an end. Thank you all for taking part over the past few months; we hope you have all enjoyed the challenge.

Depression support Many people are feeling particularly anxious at the moment, for quite obvious reasons. The local Shadows Depression Support Group which usually meets at the cadet hut at Cwmamman Park is unable to physically meet at present, but despite not being able to meet in person, if you are struggling at the moment in these difficult times with anxiety or depression, you can still access Shadows in other ways, eg via their website, or on Facebook and Twitter. You can also contact Louise on 07587 709899 or Jennifer on 07543 741788 for more details.

Also, a busy week for Community Cars, making essential journeys possible. Volunteers are still shopping for those that really need it, and also doing “keep in touch” phone calls and socially-distanced visits. Lots of Tots childcare has opened in phases to ensure provision is as safe for children and staff as we can make it. Aerial dogfight 80 years on It was on July 10, 1940, that locals witnessed a German Heinkel bomber screech overhead hotly chased by British Spitfires. It was one of the first of numerous Luftwaffe bombing raids centred on the Pembrey Ordnance Works; the largest TNT producer in Europe. Mr David M. Jones, now of Drefach, recalled that the German bomber pilot followed the Gwendraeth railway line up to Cwmmawr, as it turned, dropping the last of its deadly cargo. There was but one casualty, the death of a cow. Tragically, ten people at the gunpowder works had been killed during the earlier raid. Eighty years on the vision of a dogfight above the valley and the attendant howl of sirens and colliery hooters remains a grim memory for those few who experienced it.

Clwb 100 Hywel Dda 100 Club The last draw that took place under the auspices of the Clwb 100 Hywel Dda 100 Club was as far back as March 16 and that meant that the club had to draw 12 tickets for the months of April, May and June and with the draw arranged for July 1 it was also possible to make the draw for that month also. Twinners for April were 1st (£50) W. Griffiths, Commins Coch; 2nd (£40) Emyr Davies, 3rd (£30) David Ebsworth 4th (£20) Ann=Marie Jenkins. Winners for May were 1st (£50) Merlys Davies, 2nd (£40) Jo Shurry 3rd (£30) Elizabeth White 4th (£20) Dafydd Williams. Winners for June were 1st (£50) Lowri Wyn Lewis 2nd (£40) Kay Fuller 3rd (£30) Delme Davies 4th (£20) Cerrys Rees. A review of the financial situation of the Clwb 100 Hywel Dda 100 Club showed that it was possible to mark the end of this the second year of the club with a special additional draw for £50. The successful winner of this special prize (£50) was Dafydd Williams. The 2nd year of the Clwb 100 Hywel Dda 100 Club is coming to a successful end. and £1400 together with £150 in special prizes (total £1,550) has been donated in prizes to the members an a similar ammount will probably also be donated to the Hywel Dda Centre and Gardens. The new year for the Clwb 100 Hywel Dda 100 Club commences on August 1, and in these restricted and difficult times we, the committee, must depend on our initative and determination to see that membership (£10) reaches the club coffers. The rewards next year 2020 / 2021 depend on the capital we generate. You have supported the club generously in the past please carry on so that we can protect and develop the gardens and centre.
