FORMER CARE HOME TURNED TO RUBBLE
Site cleared for new homes
DEMOLITION of a former Carmarthen care home has taken place to make way for new homes.
In September last year, Carmarthenshire Council ruled the demolition plan for Cartref Tawelan in Ash Grove by Wales and West Housing Association (WWHA) was acceptable.
The Cardiff-based association announced its intention last summer to demolish the two-storey home in preparation for 17 new affordable homes.
The homes will sit next to three retail units built on land next to the former care home, one of which is a Co-op and the other recently opened as a fish and chips takeaway.
The Co-op opened in January, creating 15 jobs, following a £550,000 investment.
The store opens between 7am and 11pm daily, and includes customer car parking, a free ATM, Costa Coffee dispenser and bakery.
There had been much speculation over what would become of the Cartref Tawelan home itself
when it closed four years ago, and there was objection to plans for the outlets from local residents.
The application for the Co-op and units was ini
tially turned down in April last year by the council’s planning committee over concerns it would change the character of the area, increase traffic congestion
and see the loss of the green space, and the area has nearby shops and amenities already.
A petition signed by 582 people and 11 objection
letters were received. However, the Wales Planning Inspectorate overturned the refusal and the plans were given the green light in September.
