Rugby star’s move into dog-eat-dog world of business

WALES rugby star James “Cubby Boi” Davies is entering the dog-eat-dog world of business with a venture close to his heart.

The Scarlets flanker is proof that a man’s best friend really is his dog, with his canine chum Desmond being a big part of his life.

But Davies’s international rugby career means he is away from home a lot of the time, notably so last year when he went to the World Cup in Japan.

So, with this in mind, he has come up with a business project to make life easier for dog owners.

Called My Cubby Case, it’s a pet travel case specially designed to transport everything you need to look after your pet when away from home.

Davies, who has a business and marketing degree, has now launched the venture, complete with a website featuring a video of him with his beloved dog.

Explaining the background to the project, he said: “A couple of years ago, I decided to get a new best friend and picked up Desmond from a little farm in Rhayader.

“Now we are inseparable really. He’s a bit of a legend and he keeps me busy.

“Being an international rugby player, it has its difficulties. I have to travel a fair bit and being away from Des is tough, but it’s something I have to do sometimes.

“The process and preparation of going away highlighted a few issues for me.

“I was finding that getting all his toys, his bed, his bowls, all that kind of stuff together to take to my parents’ house – so he can fit in just as comfortably there as he does at home – was a challenge.

“The main issues were the carrying, transporting and having to remember all his essentials. I often found myself struggling with organising these necessities in an efficient way when handing Des over. On many occasions, I would forget something he needed.

“So I came up with the idea of a suitcase with compartments for all his needs, all his stuff, including bowls, leads, balls, toys, bed, towels.

“That’s when I came up with My Cubby Case.

“It provides for the carrying of all your dog’s needs in a comfortable and convenient way, making the difficult job of travelling with your pet easier and more enjoyable, for you, and the person who looks after your dog, while ensuring nothing is forgotten.

“Gone are the days of using carrier bags for your dog’s belongings.

“So if you decide to go for a weekend away with your furry friend or you need to hand him off to friends or family, you know that he’s got everything he needs in one place and it makes everyone’s life a little bit easier.”

It’s a busy time all round for eight-cap openside Davies, the younger brother of Wales and Lions centre Jonathan.

He has recently returned to action after nine months out with a hip injury and featured in the Scarlets’ European Challenge Cup quarter-final against Toulon.
