Walk along quiet country roads

-

ON Saturday, September 26, Cyril Phillips led the Carmarthen Ramblers on another six-mile walk in the Abergwili/whitemill area.

The route was planned so as to avoid crossing stiles and gates as much as possible and followed quiet country roads with some excellent views of the Carmarthenshire countryside.

The weather for the day was dry and sunny but the autumn weather had kicked in with a strong breeze and a noticeable drop in temperature to about 12C.

The walk started from outside the museum in Abergwili where Cyril explained the walking conditions under the Covid restrictions before setting off across the A40 into Bryn Myrddin.

This was the start of a three-quarters of a mile uphill climb. They resisted the urge to take the footpath into Allt Bryn-myrddin and continued on the country road passed Alltyfyrddin to meet a stony track as they turned eastward and followed it for just over a quarter of a mile down into the village of White Mill. The group continued in a north easterly direction along a country road for about a mile towards Glanrannell but just after Cwple turned left – passing Llwynhowell as they dropped into the valley to cross the Afon Annell at the most easterly part of the walk. This was the start of the return journey as they ascended the hillside to reach Capel Gwyn where they stopped for a refreshment break.

Suitably refreshed they walked in a south westerly direction heading back towards Abergwili gaining height gently as they walked the road to reach Pantyglien at the highest point of the walk – 110 metres – where they stopped to admire the views over the Towy Valley in good visibility.

A half-mile further along the road they passed the entrance to the stony track that they had used earlier in the walk and retraced their steps passed Alltyfyrddin to Pen-ygadair where they left the road and continued in the same general direction across a field to cross a stile on the opposite side of the field to gain access to the approach lane to Cwm Farm. The lane gradually descended Rydal Mount through Pen-ybanc to reach Castell Pigyn Road from where there was an easy five minute stroll back along the road crossing the footbridge over the A40 into Abergwili and back to the museum. The Covid restrictions are continually changing and are making it very difficult to plan too far ahead, however the details of the next walk can be obtained from the website – www.carmarthenramblers.org.uk
