Luckless Williams set for another spell on sidelines
SCOTT Williams has hinted at grim news on the injury front as he looks set to be sidelined.
Williams, 30, left the Ospreys’ New Year’s Day derby against Cardiff Blues with a shoulder problem.
The Ospreys went on to win the encounter 17-3 at Cardiff City Stadium but could be set for a longer-term blow as they await an update on Williams’s injury.
Last capped for Wales in the summer of 2019, the former Scarlets centre missed out on selection for the 2019 Rugby World Cup off the back of injury issues having been plagued by mainly back problems over the last two years.
He remains a contender for a spot in the Welsh midfield when fully fit and firing, but his 2021 seems to have got off to a bleak start already.
He admitted the game can be “cruel” at times in a social media message which also included an apology to his wife.
Posting on Instagram on Sunday, he said: “Great results to start the new year but personally didn’t end up the way I was hoping.
“It can be a cruel game at times, but that’s rugby! Sorry Tanya Williams”.
BBC Sport reports that the Swansea-based region are bracing themselves to lose Williams for a long period.
“It looked pretty bad, that one,” said Ospreys head coach Toby Booth.
“He was in a considerable amount of pain and received some significant amount of medical attention.
“We will know more when it settles but it does not look great.”
In a revealing interview in October, Newcastle Emlyn product Williams opened up on his injury struggles, admitting it was in January 2019 that he had last played without pain.
He then sustained a back injury that same month which effectively robbed him of nearly two years of his career and a World Cup spot, even losing all feeling in his leg and movement in his foot.
His wife Tanya posted last year about what he had overcome, writing: “It’s been a tough year watching Scott struggling with pain through injuries, being unable to even carry (his son) Seb, let alone stand up.”
