HEALTH NOTES
IS YOUR THYROID UNDERACTIVE?
“A PROPERLY functioning thyroid gland is vital for good health. In fact it is sometimes referred to as the conductor of the hormonal orchestra,” says Dr Deborah Lee, of Dr Fox online pharmacy.
“Most cases of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) are caused by autoimmune disease and cannot be cured. However, thyroxine can be replaced by taking a tablet every day.
“If not properly treated, complications may develop such as heart disease, or a large swelling in the neck called a goitre. There’s even a rare risk of myxoedema coma, a loss of brain function that can be fatal.
“Hypothyroidism is associated with raised cholesterol so see your GP to have your cholesterol levels checked and try to reduce the saturated fat content of your diet,” says Deborah.
It is linked to weight gain and obesity so try to keep in shape and within the normal BMI range.
NEW WAY TO EASE ARTHRITIS PAIN
TRADITIONALLY, arthritis pain is treated with steroid injections, but these can become less effective over time.
For some, the only option is opiate pain killers.
But cooled radiofrequency ablation has been shown to stun nerves, slowing the pain signals to the brain.
It was developed in the US and tested on patients unresponsive to steroids. A reduction in pain was reported by 85 per cent of them, while 74 per cent had an improved range of motion.
SELF-HELP FOR ATHLETE’S FOOT
THIS skin condition causes itchy patches, especially between the toes, but it can usually be easily treated with over-the-counter medication from a pharmacy.
“Topical treatments are very effective. Some of the newer preparations only require one application every three months,” says podiatrist Tony Gavin (osgo. co.uk).
“And put socks and hosiery through a hot wash on the day of your treatment to prevent re-infection.”
