FINAL AGONY FOR COUNTY
THE Carmarthen County Championship bowls team came up just short in the finals of the National County competition.
In their morning semi-final at Llanrindod Wells, they won four of the six rinks to beat Mid Glamorgan by 23 shots.
But in the afternoon final against a very strong Monmouthshire team, they soon found themselves dropping well behind, with major damage inflicted on the Carmarthenshire score by Jonathan Tomlinson and Rich Underwood.
In the end Carmarthenshire were well beaten, with only Wyn Matthews and Jordan Driscoll managing to keep in touch. They returned drawn rinks when the match was conceded.
In the National competitions held at Llandrindod Wells over the last week, Carmarthenshire bowlers did their utmost to bring home silverware.
However, the only group to reach the final round was the over60 pairing of Wynford Thomas and Clouie John, who were representing Dafen Welfare.
Following a morning semi-final win against a Mid Wales duo which was decided on an extra end, they went into the afternoon final and took an early lead.
Their opponents took control of the second half of the contest and went on to win the competition.
Other players had battled their way through the early rounds only to fall at the semi-final stages.
In the only match held in the PARA Pairs competition, Havelock Park’s Chris Spriggs, who was partnered by Llanelli’s Dylan Williams, lost to Julie Thomas and Paul Brown by three shots.
The remaining promotion place in the Llanelli and District Bowling League was decided in a midweek game when Calsonic Wanderers hosted Gowerton in division one.
Gowerton required either 11 points or just 10 with a sizeable shots advantage to take the spot ahead of Burry Port, who had finished their season.
With just two ends to play, Gowerton were well ahead on two rinks, giving them 10 points, and all eyes were on the battle between
Calsonic’s Gwyn Morris and Gowerton’s Phil Davies that remained a very close contest.
On the penultimate end, the Morris four retook the lead and held it to the end to deny Gowerton the additional point needed for promotion, much to the relief of the Burry Port players who had turned up to watch.
