Powerful opponents prove too good for Narberth

-

IN the third game in the second phase of the restructured WRU Championship, Narberth 1sts went down 40-13 at home to a powerful Bargoed side.

Narberth played very well in the first half, with a good kicking game and spoiling Bargoed’s strong and renowned driving lineout. Narberth used the elements well and were unlucky to be 7-6 down at the interval.

The second half was a different story as Bargoed used their extra power and experience through the ex-professionals in their team.

Narberth tried hard and that hard work was rewarded with a fine individual try by young scrum-half George Macdonald.

There were solid performances from Guto Davies, skipper Richie Rees and Mathew John on permit from Haverfordwest. Rees gave an outstanding performance but the main sponsors of the match, “The Food Hut helpers”, nominated openside flanker Guto Davies as their man of the match.

Narberth 2nds played a strong Treorchy team who were in Pembrokeshire on a mini tour and went down 22-14.

The game was very competitive, with both sides spreading the ball at every opportunity. In the end the visitors had a little too much power and experience, but the young Otters made them work hard for their points, going down by four tries to two.

Narberth’s tries came from Dan Owens and Llyr Miles in his first game of the season. Man of the match was awarded by the coaching team to Dylan Walsh for an all-action performance on the flank and at scrum-half.

This Saturday Narberth 2nds welcome Tenby in the Pembrokeshire Cup (2pm).

Narberth Youth faced a stern test on Saturday when the visitors were unbeaten Llangennech.

Narberth had the wind at their backs for the first half and Fraser Jones, playing at 10, kicked well to establish good positions.

Strong defence from Llangennech kept the home side out and against the run of play they broke away and scored a good try. Two penalties and a brilliant individual try from Fraser Jones, who also converted, after great work at a breakdown by Harry Harries, saw the half-time score 13-7 to Narberth 7.

In the second half with the elements in their favour Llangennech dominated the early part of the half and raced to a 26-13 lead.

Narberth, however, showed how much they have progressed this season and didn’t give in and were rewarded by a fine try from Charlie Phillips, converted by Jones.

The game ended 26-20 to the visitors but the Narberth coaching team were not overly disappointed as this was a bigger and older Llangennech side and Narberth were missing a couple of key forwards.

The Narberth man of the match award was given by the coaching team to Fraser Jones.
