Amman undone in dramatic late drama

-

AMMANFORD AFC ............. 3 CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH .... 4

A LATE defensive lapse cost Ammanford as they went down to a dramatic 4-3 defeat at home to Cambrian & Clydach in JD Cymru South on Friday night.

Ammanford got off to the perfect start when Ammanford midfielder Kai Whitmore broke free of his markers and slotted the ball wide of Cambrian & Clydach’s goalkeeper Jack Jenkins to give his team a ninth-minute lead.

The Rhondda visitors, managed by former Cardiff City player Scott Young, responded well and started to pass the ball around and were causing problems for the home defence.

They equalised on the halfhour mark when centre-forward Ryan Prosser rifled a powerful low shot into the net despite a desperate diving attempt by home goalkeeper Craig Morris.

The second half saw Ammanford manager Gruffydd Harrison make an early substitution, bringing on Brett Enoch in place of midfielder Dale Jones.

With an hour gone impressive wide-man Liam Reed beat the Ammanford defence and gave his team the lead with a well-taken goal.

But four minutes later Enoch got himself free wide on the left close to the byline and took the ball into the penalty area and unleashed a low drive that sped into the bottom corner of the net at the far post.

After 76 minutes a scramble in the Ammanford area saw Cambrian centre-back Connor Young score from close range, but with three added minutes to play, Ammanford were awarded a free-kick some 24 yards out.

Up stepped striker Lee Trundle and his powerful low shot went directly under the wall and into the net.

Trundle ran to the Ammanford dugout to celebrate, but the drama was not over. Two minutes later Cambrian’s Finn Jones found himself in front of the Ammanford goal with not a defender in sight and calmly stroked the ball past Craig Morris to restore his team’s lead.

A fine performance from the visitors but a very disappointing ending for the home side.

Ammanford AFC are home again in the league this Friday, against Port Talbot-based Trefelin.
