Ramblers trek along coastal paths and tracks

-

ON Sunday, November 14, Remembrance Sunday, Carys and Colin Thomas Ray led the Carmarthen Ramblers on a five-mile walk that included coastal paths and tracks in the Marros/pendine area.

The unusual feature about this walk was that it started from the highest point along the route at a height of 139 metres. The weather was reasonably good allowing some great coastal views and there was hardly a breeze and the temperature just still a mild 12C.

The walk started in a light drizzle from the church car park in Marros on the link road between Pendine and Amroth, but soon cleared as they headed southwards towards the sea for about three quarters of a mile along a lane that led past Marros Farm and Talyvan Farm and slowly descended the side of Marros Beacon. There were good views over the whole of Carmarthen Bay with Caldey Island clearly visible on one side and Worms Head on Gower at the tip of the opposite side. They continued down the track until they met the Wales Coast Path and turned eastwards to follow it around Marros Hill towards the end of Marros sands where they then started to climb back up the hillside.

Just before 11am, they reached a section of track that levelled off and there with the most pleasant view of a calm, peaceful secluded beach of Marros Sands they stopped to observe the two-minute silence and the only sound was that of the incoming tide lapping gently against the shore.

A few hundred metres further up the track they stopped for a coffee break on the rocks with the fantastic aerial view over Pendine then suitably refreshed, they continued on along the cliff top for about a quarter of a mile before the path dropped steeply zig-zagging down the hillside to reach sea level at Morfa Bychan beach.

From sea level there was now a gentle climb along a track through a woodland with all the beautiful autumn colours for just over a mile to reach a road near The Green Bridge public house. Here they turned left – westwards – along the road just 100 metres then turned into a lane that swept around through some muddy fields to reach a diverted footpath that led around the cottage of Pwll to a lane where they stopped for lunch on some conveniently placed rocks.

In the afternoon they followed a track around the edge of Marros Mountain about a quarter of a mile to reach the Church car park in Marros to complete the walk. Details of the next walk can be found on the website at www.carmarthenramblers.org. uk
