Brace for Jenkins as Ammanford win thriller

-

AMMANFORD AFC defied some dreadful conditions to storm to a 5-3 win over Trefelin BGC in JD Cymru South.

The contest was played on a bitterly cold, rainy evening with the odd hailstone shower thrown in for good measure.

The deadlock was broken after 17 minutes when Ammanford’s Lee Trundle was tripped as he broke into the Trefelin penalty area.

Matthew Fisher blasted the spot-kick high into the net, giving keeper Keenan Bailey no chance.

This game was coming to life with individual battles breaking out all over the pitch.

Trefelin midfielder Jordan Davies was trying his best to pull the strings for his team, while Ammanford midfielder Anthony Finselbach was proving dominant in closing down the space in central areas.

Ammanford’s Kai Whitmore had golden chances to add further goals, but instead turned provider for paceman Tristan Jenkins to double the advantage in the 34th minute from close range.

But the lead was cut to 2-1 before the break when Trefelin’s Damon Thomas gathered the ball just inside the Ammanford half and powered forward virtually unopposed before curling a shot wide of goalkeeper Craig Morris into the far corner of the net.

Morris was called into action again before the interval, and the importance of his fine save was highlighted early in the second half when Whitmore restored Ammanford’s two-goal lead by breaking free of defenders and then slotting home.

But it was Whitmore’s last meaningful involvement as he and Trefelin’s Joe Clarke had an altercation in the centre of the pitch which saw both players shown red cards.

Within a minute Ammanford’s Jenkins broke free from his markers and rounded the Trefelin goalkeeper to score his second goal of the game.

Trefelin continued to take the game to the home side and were rewarded for their efforts in the 65th minute when the Ammanford defence was split wide open, enabling Ryan Griffiths to pull a goal back.

Five minutes later Trundle played a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Fisher, who finished the move with a clinical finish for his second goal of the evening.

Trefelin again pressed forward and nine minutes from time grabbed their third goal of the game when Roan Piper scored.
